There are three types of scholarships: need-based scholarships, merit-based scholarships, and student- or career-specific scholarships.
Many top U.S. private colleges including Ivy League universities offer need-based scholarships. These awards are based only on students’ financial need. Many Ivy League schools have offered these need-based scholarships to more than 50% of the students they accepted. Usually, each recipient receives around $130,000 for his or her four years of full-time education at the school.
However, requesting financial aids may have an effect on the admissions decisions, regardless of whether they are ‘need-awareness’, ‘need–sensitive’ or ‘need-blind’ scholarships.
State (public) universities and less reputable colleges tend to offer merit scholarships instead. These scholarships usually range from $1000 to $30,000.
There are also various student-specific and career-specific scholarships. The criteria for these scholarships vary and may be limited to students of certain nationality or specific fields of study.
Besides all these scholarships above, financial aids include student loans, grants, and campus work, etc.

We do not yet have graduates who were accepted by Harvard. As we know, no Chinese or Korean student from Victoria has gotten into Harvard for the past 9 years. (Ten years ago, one student who was a great musician was accepted to Harvard.)
We have heard that a student from SONG-Hakwen had been accepted by Stanford. However, we could not confirm this directly with him and so we do not count this case.
Nevertheless, we have had several graduates who are now currently attending top U.S. universities, including Ivy League universities. These universities that have accepted our students include Columbia University (ranked 4th in the United States), University of Pennsylvania (ranked 5th), Dartmouth College, Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, Washington University in St. Louis, and University of California - Berkeley, just to name a few.
It has been a phenomenal achievement for an after-school academy like SONG-Hakwen from which graduates each year are fewer than ten, because almost all our graduates have gotten into the top universities in North America. What is more amazing is that all these students who are currently attending the world’s best universities are from the small city Victoria only, not from all over Canada.
However, we do not value the school only by its name. Instead, we strive to connect each student with the college that best fits his or her interests, talents, and dreams.
For example, we are especially proud of our Chinese student (Y. Wang) who was accepted Early Decision last year by the M&T Program in the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. With an acceptance rate of less than 1% (lower than Harvard’s), M&T program is considered the most prestigious program in the world. (It eventually gained the nickname “the shortest path to become a billionaire.”) This program was the reason Wang did not apply for Harvard even though he had the qualifications for all top universities.
